About the Committee

The World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations dedicated to promoting global public health and coordinating international responses to health crises. In our Model United Nations conference, the WHO committee provides delegates with the opportunity to tackle urgent global health challenges—ranging from pandemic preparedness and vaccine equity to mental health, nutrition, and healthcare accessibility. Delegates will work to develop evidence-based, collaborative policies that balance national priorities with the shared goal of achieving universal health coverage. Through debate and negotiation, participants will gain a deeper understanding of global health governance, scientific policymaking, and the vital role of international cooperation in safeguarding the well-being of all people.

Topic 1: Ensuring Equitable Access to Insulin and Diabetes Care Worldwide

Millions of people still lack access to insulin and proper diabetes care. High costs and limited availability cause suffering and preventable deaths. Governments and organizations must work together to make insulin affordable and accessible for everyone, everywhere.

Topic 2: Reducing the Global Burden of Mental Illness and Suicide Rates

Throughout much of history, mental illness was misunderstood, feared, or even criminalized. Ancient civilizations often attributed mental disorders to spiritual or supernatural causes. During the Middle Ages, individuals with mental illness were frequently institutionalized or ostracized.
A major shift occurred during the 19th and 20th centuries, when medical professionals began to view mental illness as a health condition requiring scientific treatment rather than punishment or isolation. Early pioneers like Sigmund Freud and Emil Kraepelin developed modern frameworks for understanding psychiatric conditions.
It is the committee's goal to address the ongoing stigma surrounding mental health and to promote policies that ensure access to mental health care for all individuals, regardless of their background or circumstances.
